The characteristic redness of couperose occurs mainly on the cheeks and around the nose and indicates a weakness of the vessels. Most people who develop couperose have a genetic predisposition. But it can also be caused or exacerbated by temperature differences, intense sunbathing, high blood pressure, alcohol or intense coffee consumption. Couperose-prone skin is often hypersensitive and dry. The redness is caused by the dilated blood vessels. With couperose one can distinguish two phases: In phase 1 it comes to a short-term, temporary redness on cheeks and nose. In Phase 2, the vessel walls are increasingly damaged and need protective care. The redness is permanent and intense, and the vascular network is clearly under the skin. For skin prone to couperose you should use a high sun protection factor or sunblock in the sun, do without sauna visits and use only gentle peels. Coffee, black tea, alcohol and spicy food should be avoided if possible as they dilate the blood vessels.
