DetailsIt is not age alone that determines whether and to what extent our skin is wrinkled. In addition to the moisture content of the skin and the nature of its surface, the skin's elasticity determines how smooth and firm our skin is. The elasticity of the skin is in turn determined by several factors and decreases in the course of our lives. The collagen fibers in our skin form a supporting corset for the cells. When we laugh or frown, the supportive fibers of protein building blocks make the skin move back to its original position after our muscles move. From the mid-twenties, our body reduces the production of collagen. At the same time, the degradation of elastic fibers is increasing - mainly due to environmental influences and hormonal fluctuations. During menopause, the altered hormone balance increases this degradation. The result: The skin becomes thinner and flabbier. Visible, this change is mainly due to wrinkles and the facial contours begin to hang. But also different external influences increase the collagen fibers. Among all external factors, UV radiation has the greatest effect on skin aging. Excessive solar radiation results in a so-called photodamaged skin characterized by increased dryness and sensitivity, loss of elasticity, deep wrinkling and irregular pigmentation. The UV and the infrared radiation lead to a sticking of the collagen fibers. This limits their mobility and their ability to bind water. Excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can also damage the skin. Due to the reduced blood flow during smoking, the skin is no longer sufficiently supplied with oxygen and nutrients and the degradation of collagen and elastin is promoted. But too little sleep and an unbalanced diet reduce the basic elasticity of our skin. In order to effectively protect the skin from loss of elasticity, it is therefore important to have a healthy lifestyle and a sensible way of dealing with sunlight. In addition, there are a number of agents that protect the collagen fibers or stimulate their regeneration.
